Shoreline Restoration
Today, our shoreline is disappearing.
Each storm, each high tide, and each year of erosion takes more land, more habitat, and more of the natural Chesapeake Bay shoreline that cannot easily be replaced once it is gone.
After extensive evaluation by coastal engineers and shoreline restoration experts, we have developed a comprehensive plan to protect and restore this highly exposed section of Chesapeake Bay shoreline.
Without intervention, erosion will continue to threaten the shoreline, wildlife habitat, and the natural coastal environment that makes this area so special.
The Solution
The proposed restoration project includes:
• Three offshore breakwaters designed to reduce destructive wave energy
• Placement of 5,000 cubic yards of clean washed sand to create and restore a natural beach
• Installation of native high marsh grasses to improve habitat and stabilize sediments
• Removal of fallen trees and shoreline debris
• Long-term shoreline protection through a nature-based living shoreline system
The project has been conceptually designed by professional coastal engineers and is estimated to cost $1,425,000, including design, permitting, environmental review, and construction.
Why This Matters
This project is about more than protecting a single shoreline.
Living shorelines help:
• Reduce erosion
• Improve water quality
• Create habitat for fish, crabs, shorebirds, and aquatic species
• Increase resilience to storms and sea level rise
• Preserve Chesapeake Bay ecosystems for future generations
The shoreline is already experiencing significant erosion. Delaying action will only increase costs and result in additional loss of land and habitat.
Funding Goal
Our goal is to raise the full $2,000,000 needed to complete this project from start to finish.
Funds raised will be used for:
- Engineering and environmental studies
- Federal, state, and local permitting
- Offshore breakwater construction
- Beach restoration and sand placement
- Marsh grass plantings
- Construction mobilization and implementation
Every dollar raised goes directly toward making this shoreline restoration project a reality.
A Lasting Legacy
This project represents an opportunity to restore and protect a vulnerable Chesapeake Bay shoreline using environmentally responsible methods that will benefit both people and wildlife for decades to come.
We invite you to become part of this effort and help preserve this shoreline before it is lost forever.
