Save Garden Memorial Church
I am a Presbyterian minister who preaches at Garden Memorial Presbyterian Church, a small church in Anacostia (1720 Minnesota Ave, SE), on the first Sunday of each month and celebrates communion with the congregation. I am running a crowdfunding campaign because the congregation discovered that its building had been sold by DC to someone else due to a tax lien placed on it by DC. Apparently, an audit showed that the day care center for poor children in its basement, leased to it on the basis of it being a non-profit organization, was or had become a for-profit, destroying the church's tax-exempt status. The Presbytery has now paid the tax lien, but we owe National Capital Presbytery the money. Thus, the congregation needs to raise more than $50K to repay this large loan.
The church has been in the community for over 125 years, serving the community in many ways, including providing a place where the indigent can have funerals, helping with neighborhood watches, being involved with children's education, and many, many more programs through the years.
Please help Garden Memorial save its building and its proud heritage. Thanks for your consideration.
