Save Islam's Family Gaza

My name is Nina Gorman, a psychology teacher, counseler and human rights supporter. I am doing this campaign for my friend Islam Abu Al Najjar (30 years old) and her two little children, Noha (3 years old) and baby Ahmed (4 months old) from Khan Younis, Al Mawasi, in Gaza to help them to survive this horrendous war, prevent their starvation, and hopefully to evacuate to Egypt and relocate to Spain.

I came to know Islam from social media meta about six months ago when she confided in me the horrors and suffering she has endured. She lost her home which was bombed by a missile early in the war and totally destroyed, leading her to be trapped in the rubble, and sustaining head injury from shrapnel that broke her skull and burned her leg severely leaving her today with frequent dizziness, excruciating headaches, difficulties concentrating, neurapathy and sporadic seizures. She needs medications to prevent the seizures but is not taking any since cannot afford them and some shrapnel is stuck in her head giving her pain daily especially when it is hot or cold but she cannot afford painkillers either.

She and her husband and children were displaced living in a tent which is now torn from the rains and leaks profusely. If it is not replaced she is at risk of having no tent at all. About 8 months ago, her husband traveled to the notorious American-occupation run distribution sites to try to get some flour for the hungry family but he did not return. Thus, her husband was likely killed there as were so many but Islam lives with the uncertainty that if not deceased he may be in prison as many at at the distribution sites were also detained and the prison conditions are quite horrid with starvation, beatings and torture.

Islam wants now to survive with her two children. She is quite malnourished and weak making nursing difficult for her and baby Ahmed and so needs formula to supplement her nursing and also diapers that are quite expensive. She cannot buy vegetables for proper nourishment as they are too costly. She must carry water with children in tow which is exhausting and waits in long lines for a bowl of bean soup with many days coming back with nothing.

This little family needs many items, especially food, clothing, toiletries and cleaners, and also medicine for parasitic infections and extermination as the bugs and mice and rats and snakes invade the tents day and night and in the summer months this situation will be worsening. Her phone is in need of repair as well and often does not work properly even for a camera so she cannot take more pictures.

The bombing is now escalating and the shootings and the starvation with fear of famine looming and most aid organizaions banned from operation by the occupation. Islam live sin fear daily with the children crying from the sounds of explosions and Islam wondering if she will be next or her children and who will raise her children if she does not survive as she has no extended family to help her

Though she prefers not to leave her land, she feels she has no other choice but to attempt to leave Gaza after she searches for her husband when the crossings open to relocate to Egypt in the hopes of relocation to another country in Europe, likely Spain since they are friendly to Palestinians. She hopes to give her children a better life and to acquire work possibly selling vegetables as her husband used to do before the war and the bombing of his shop by the occupation like most stores in Gaza.

I urge you to do what you can to support this little family who has endured so much sufferring and to keep them from starving, inspire hope that they can survive this genocide and have a future again that has some comfort, security and happiness.

Here is Islam in her Own Words:

My name is Islam Al-Najjar, only 30 years old from Khan Younis, Al Mawasi in the Gaza strip. Though I am only 30, I feel like I am 60 since this war as aged me in many ways with hardship that is hard to talk about and describe. Before the war my husband and I had a vegetable store and he was hardworking and successful, Though life was not easy then from loss of electricity often, difficulty getting many items, and bombings every few years, we had a happy life. Then this war came like no other. Our home was bombed my a missile by the occupation and my skull was broken and my leg badly burned. I was stuck in the rubble until Thanks to God I was rescued. Healing was difficult with many days in the hospital and fear the the hospital would get bombed or the occupation would enter and harm me. My husband was with me and cared for me with tenderness and my daughter Noha though frightened by the bombing and my injuries he survived also. I suffer with daily dizziness and bad headaches from the shrapnel in my head and cannot afford pain killers. I have now trouble reading and computing numbers.

Because my husband's store was bombed and our home with all its items and many memories we became poor which embarrased us as we were not used to it and which led to much difficulty including challenges with eating every day and feeding Noha and with my new pregnancy with Ahmed. So my husband when he heard about the aid distribution sites in Rafah despite knowing it was dangerous to go there decided to try it since we were hungry and getting thinner and could not afford to eat since at that time there was famine in Gaza. He was worried about baby Ahmed in my belly also.

I waited for him to return that night and then the next day and the next night with great anxiety and worry. Then the days turned to weeks and the weeks turned to months leading me to lose hope but the fear has remained daily as I to this day do not know if he is in prison being harmed by the occupation or if he is in heaven or if he will ever return to us so we can become a family again. My daughter asks where her father is and why her father left her which brings tears to my eyes as I do not know what to tell her.

I struggle to nurse but am so tired since like many women in Gaza I suffer from anemia from lack of iron from not getting vegetables or meat since they are so expensive and I have no income to afford them, Therefore, I need to buy formula but I cannot afford that either. So I fear Ahmed will be stunted in his growth. I try not to cry when he cries and I cannot feed him.

The tent is torn and leaks when it rains and is so weak I am afraid it will blow away into the sea. It is very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. I really need a new one but if I get a cover it would be helpful and maybe last a little longer. The smoke from cooking chokes me and the children. I really need a gas tube for cooking. The bugs and mice invade the tent and leave us scratching with parasitic infections and am afraid a stray dog or rat will enter and bite the baby like I hear happening in many tents in Gaza. We need medicines for the itching and treatment for fevers often and cleaners for extermination.

Especially since my husband has been gone every day has been constant struggle. I am in panic daily and have continual dizziness and trouble concentratig from the shrapnel in my head. I have to take Noha and carry baby Ahmed to travel long distances for water which exhausts me and then have to wait in lines for food which allows us to eat once a day only and is usually only bean soup or noodle stew with no vegetables. I am so tired everyday. I try to sleep at night and some nights I fall asleep and do not want to get up. Other nights I cannot sleep at all from the bombing or the constant thoughts in my head of what I can do about my predicament. So I asked Nina who I met on social media if she could help me with a campaign since she has helped many others with making campaigns. I was very happy she agreed to help me but fear getting no donations since when I ask on facebook nearly everyone ignores me. Now my phone is breaking and does not always work. I get afraid it will stop working entirely one day and I will be cut off from the world more with no access to social media. Some days I feel so lonely.

Though I do not want to leave Gaza, I feel I must if the crossings open and we are permitted to travel to Egypt. Before I go if I go I will search for my husband to be sure he is not in prison. It would be wonderful if we could all go together, start a new life elsewhere and then some day return to Gaza which is our true home. I am in great despair now and have to rely on the kindness of others. The alternative is more pain and great sorrow and hardship for me and my children. So I hope you will have compassion on me and my little family of two tiny children. I will surely be most appreciative of your generosity and pray for you often.

 Sincerely

  Islam
