Save the Criterion Schoolhouse

Good news! The Oregon Retired Educators Association in collaboration with the Oregon State Fair Foundation has procured a $6,100 grant from the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund to replace the windows and address the dry rot issues of the Criterion Schoolhouse located on the Oregon State Fairgrounds. There is a need to match this grant or we will have to return the funds. OREA needs your help to keep this repair project moving along. There is much at stake as this little schoolhouse stands as a tribute to public education in Oregon and deserves to be preserved, restored and enhanced!

Important background information:
This building was moved over 200 miles from Maupin, Oregon, for the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration. The building had to be cut in half to get across one of the bridges. The building was reassembled at the fairgrounds, repainted, and the roof replaced. Last year, over 3,600 visitors were hosted by 74 OREA volunteers/friends during the fair.

The Oregon Retired Educators Association (OREA), with the help of key allies, have launched a fundraiser to save the Criterion Schoolhouse. Our goal is to preserve, restore and enhance the Criterion Schoolhouse:
  • Replace the roof---accomplished the summer of 2017 due to help from Free Funder Donors along with organizations and individuals---THANK YOU!!!
  • Replace windows that are no longer able to be fixed
  • Address wood rot issues
  • Address ADA accessibility issues
  • Remove lead paint
  • Repaint the building inside and out
  • Refresh the schoolhouse bell
  • Repair the ceiling and flooring
We need to raise $6,100 dollars asap in order to replace the windows and address any wood rot issues found in the process. This work needs to be done by August 12th in order to be ready for the next State Fair. Any additional funds raised will go into a dedicated building repair fund designed to sustain the facility into the future.
Thank you for your time and consideration. We, the people of Oregon and friends, can do this--Together!
