Save the Criterion Schoolhouse
Good news! The Oregon Retired Educators Association in collaboration with the Oregon State Fair Foundation has procured a $6,100 grant from the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund to replace the windows and address the dry rot issues of the Criterion Schoolhouse located on the Oregon State Fairgrounds. There is a need to match this grant or we will have to return the funds. OREA needs your help to keep this repair project moving along. There is much at stake as this little schoolhouse stands as a tribute to public education in Oregon and deserves to be preserved, restored and enhanced!
Important background information:
This building was moved over 200 miles from Maupin, Oregon, for the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration. The building had to be cut in half to get across one of the bridges. The building was reassembled at the fairgrounds, repainted, and the roof replaced. Last year, over 3,600 visitors were hosted by 74 OREA volunteers/friends during the fair.
