As the second anniversary of the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan arrived in August 2023, many thousands of our former Afghan National Defense Security Forces (ANDSF) partners, other members of the former Afghan government, and Afghan International NGO partners are still on the run from Taliban retribution. After being abandoned in 2021, the vast majority have been unable to leave Afghanistan and relocate to a safer country. 

ANDSF forces and other Afghan professionals have sacrificed for decades in the fight for democracy. Tens of thousands have lost their lives in the past 20 years. Weekly accounts from Afghanistan report the torture and killing of former ANDSF members by the Taliban.

In Dave Shearman and JT Taman's book “Outside the Wire in Blue” (OTWIB) from Title Town Publishing (https://www.titletownbooks.com/), one of Dave's most loyal host nation partners is showcased. He and other partners are still struggling to avoid Taliban targeting. It's a constant and daily struggle for them to keep themselves and their families safe until they can relocate. OTWIB is a book that shares the untold story of a little-known but highly successful Department of Defense (DoD) program in Afghanistan and Iraq. The U.S. military leaders recognized that contemporary tactics and strategies were ineffective against an insurgency that acted more like thugs and criminals than a typical fighting force. As the U.S. military lacked the skill set to understand organized crime, the mindset of criminals, and the tactics and techniques of gangs, the solution was found in recruiting seasoned U.S. Law Enforcement Professionals into a specialized DoD program.

Approaching two years, the team has been working with our nonprofit partner Operation Rescue (OR) and has moved 100's of at-risk Afghans from harm's way since “the fall.” However, the list of those in need remains long, with allies under dire threats and desperate to leave. 

Although the process is slow, OR has some recent “good news" stories, as several families it rescued have reached the United States.  This success propels our collective team to persevere and “grind on.”
