Friends, I need your help in my continuing fight to protect my 95 year old mother, Grace, from predatory family members. Some of you know the story; for those who don't in a nutshell my beautiful mom has been vulnerable since a transitory stroke in 2000. In recent years, isolated and controlled, her capacity has diminished greatly leaving her vulnerable to financial and psychological abuse. The problem is the main abuser holds all the legal powers and as trustee their legal fees are paid for by my mother, while I am forced to pay out of pocket — $20,000 thus far and counting - money I could ill afford and partially put on credit. I finally have a tough lawyer who understands the criminal import of what's occurring — elder abuse is insidious and often flies under the radar. Many many lawyers have discouraged me from this fight, citing high costs and difficulty. My response is that's my mom, and I won't give up because she would do the same for me if she had to. The fight is even more urgent at the moment, as I discovered on my most recent visit that my mom has a most likely cancerous growth that is not being treated. I can get no information from her doctor because of the abuser's lockdown on HIPAA privacy. We have just subpoenaed the medical records, which they may fight. My obvious fear is that my mother is dying; she sleeps constantly and now is eating very lightly whereas her appetite had been good on our last visit. If I was not a single mother I would be at her side right now, and I anticipate many costs associated with traveling there in the immediate future. And before you other single parents reach into your pockets and make a donation that is a reach for you, let me know if you can house sit, pet sit, drive my daughter to school Highland Park to downtown, or pick her up while I am going to see my mom - that would be huge! If you are handy and can help senior proof the house let me know as my goal is to move her in with us to provide a cocoon of unconditional love and care. Let me know if you have airline miles to transfer, rental car or hotel credits, anything that can help offset the cost of travel. Picking up from school would be huge; maybe taking in my senior Chihuahua when we can both go to see my mom, as she is also requiring more these days, whatever support in whatever way you can, will be most appreciated. 🙏🏼
