As the impact happened, "she caught him in mid-air right on impact," shielding his small body with her own. ​Because of her selfless bravery, Chico walked away from the wreckage without a single scratch. Kristen, however, bore the brunt of that protection, suffering a cracked rib and severe chest injuries. She saved his life that night, and now we are fighting to save our future. ​The Reality of the Road Ahead While we are a miracle of survival, the aftermath has been devastating: ​Mark is battling the intense pain of a broken foot and being immobile and unable to work has brought everything to a sudden, painful halt. ​Kristen is enduring the agony of a cracked rib, making every breath a struggle. To make matters worse, the accident destroyed her laptop, which she desperately needs to continue her studies at Indiana Wesleyan University. ​The Loss: Our vehicle was a total loss.
