Shutdown Struggles

Hello everyone,

My name is Sankan, and I’m a full-time government contract employee working as an epidemiologist for a federal agency. Due to the ongoing government shutdown — now stretching past 30 days, the longest in U.S. history — I have been unable to work or receive any pay since October 6, 2025.

Unlike direct-hire federal employees, contract workers like myself will not receive back pay once the shutdown ends. This means that even when the government reopens, I will remain in a deep financial hole.

This situation has left me struggling to keep up with my bills. I’ve reached out to my creditors to explain my circumstances, but unfortunately, none have programs in place to assist workers affected by the shutdown — they still expect regular payments, even though I haven’t received a paycheck in over a month.

I’ve tried every possible avenue for help:

  • I’ve contacted local nonprofits and churches for rental assistance, but many prioritize families with children and low-income households. As a single woman with no dependents, I fall to the bottom of the list — and many of these organizations are overwhelmed with requests.
  • I’ve filed for unemployment, but it could take weeks before I receive any benefits.
  • I also work a part-time service job, but the hours are inconsistent and only help cover basic needs like food and gas.

On top of all this, I’ve recently taken on the care of my elderly mother, who was diagnosed with dementia. It’s been a heavy emotional and financial burden, but I’m doing my best to stay strong and positive. I’ve worked since I was 14 years old and have always prided myself on being independent — finding a way, no matter how tough things get. Asking for help doesn’t come easily to me, but this situation is truly beyond my control.

I’m humbly asking for assistance to cover my rent and late fees for November, along with my gas and electric bills for the month. My leasing office has notified me that they will file for eviction on November 19 if payment isn’t made by then.

Anything you can contribute — no matter how small — would mean the world to me and help me keep a roof over my head while I wait for work and pay to resume. I’m deeply grateful for any support you can offer, and I’m praying for everyone affected by these difficult times.

Thank you so much for reading, sharing, and supporting in any way you can.

With gratitude,

Sankan
