In Tigard, Oregon, a small community of families took a risk - to place their children (at least 50% English-only) in a unique opportunity to have a bilingual education in a public school. The "experiment" placed these kids into their first formal classroom, with words most of these kinders could not understand (zero English from Day 1). After 13 years of being "the first" and an ongoing "test class," 42 students will be graduating, many with the Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy (they had to pass a college level 5-part formal test in Spanish), High honors, including Valedictorians and National Honor Society members, thousands of volunteer hours within the Tigard and Portland communities, and talents in both sports and the arts, while maintaining jobs. However, the school is a Title IV school (supports low-income), and the District cannot provide the funds for a cord at graduation or a celebration. These students' efforts, the obstacles they had to overcome, and the community contributions they've made deserve recognition.
