Susan Fleming Scholarship

THE SUSAN HAENNI FLEMING MEMORIAL MIDDLE SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP FOR PASSION IN READING, LITERATURE AND TEACHING

PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING, ANY AMOUNT. HELP US REACH OUR GOAL!!!!!!!

Susan Haenni Fleming passed away on June 7, 2018 after a courageous year-long battle from stage IV Melanoma; one day before her birthday and 360 days after diagnosis.

Susan was a 6th grade teacher at Memorial Middle School in Point Pleasant NJ for over 25 years. She taught Language Arts, was Team Leader and the Adviser for the Middle School Yearbook for many years.

Susan had a passion for teaching that is rarely seen. To say she lived for her student's would be an understatement.

Susan was awarded the honor of Teacher of the Year several years ago, and in 2017 she received the Principal's Teacher of Special Recognition award.

My sister had a unwavering desire to teach her students the love of a good book and to read anything they could get their hands on. She encouraged each and every one of her kids to write; she would tell stories of our years growing up to get the spark going for them to find their own stories. Write about family, a pet, the sunset, what makes you happy, sad; anything to get their minds going.

In September of 2017, when her doctor informed her that she could not work any longer; that she had to put all her strength into fighting her cancer; she knew it was the right decision, but it was also one of her saddest days. She lived for her kids, all of them.

She was loved by staff and students alike. The teachers formed a meal train as Susan was too weak to cook for herself. Every two days food was delivered by one of the teachers. Her students would leave little gifts on her door step, not wanting to disturb her if she was napping. Decorating her house for Christmas to surprise her. This is a woman who was loved by all for her compassion, strength and unwavering desire to change a child's life through knowledge and books and stories.

In her spare time Susan loved to read, ride her bike, spend time with her children and just enjoy life.

Susan left behind three adult children, two daughter in laws, one grandson, two sisters and more friends and colleagues that loved her than can ever be counted.

We all go through life hoping to find our one true niche, Susan found hers in the classroom.

This scholarship is for her legacy. She inspired so many. Our goal to to continue her passion as best we can.

Thank you.
