The Arepa Project

The Arepa Project is a community-based culinary business conceived and launched by 4 cocineros from Venezuela, and a group of parent activists, all with kids in Ditmas Park public schools. The project links Johan, Evelin, Daniela and Victor with host kitchens across several Brooklyn based neighborhoods where they make delicious arepas and hallacas for customers all over the city.

The families spent 2024 at the Floyd Bennett Field tent city, and are now staying in 2 separate hotels in Manhattan and Brooklyn while they search for their own homes. Though the city-run hotels are far better than FBF, they come with arduous commutes to and from schools, supermarkets, and host kitchens. And after 60 days, they will have to reapply for new housing. But there is progress! Now heading into their second year here, los cocineros have completed the challenging task of securing social security numbers and work permits, and are taking on more of the project's day-to-day logistics previously handled by volunteers. In the midst of a tumultuous migration, a baby on the way (next week!) and a housing crisis — theirs is a story of resilience and determination.

The incoming administration makes los cocineros' future here more precarious. So it is with a sense of urgency that we ask this community to get together and help them stay the course. No contribution is too small - we are so grateful for the many neighbors who continue to welcome and support los cocineros in whatever way they can.
