When my twins were in the NICU, I learned just how hard and confusing it is to be a NICU parent, especially when it comes to pumping. I didn’t even feel like I was breastfeeding because I wasn’t nursing directly. I was just pumping. But the truth is: pumping is breastfeeding, and it deserves real support.

What most people don’t realize is how strict NICU rules are. If breastmilk isn’t labeled correctly, stored properly, or kept at the right temperature, it has to be thrown away. And donor milk is only available for a very short time.

And here’s why that matters so much:

Breastmilk isn’t just nourishment, it’s protection. For premature babies, it can be life-saving. It helps guard against serious complications like NEC (necrotizing enterocolitis), a dangerous intestinal disease that’s more likely to develop in preemies who receive formula. A mother’s milk is uniquely designed to meet her baby’s needs, and in the NICU, it’s often the only thing she can give.

I started The Support Nest to support NICU families through every part of the journey.

Our first big initiative is launching NICU Pumping Support Kits, filled with real tools and emotional encouragement to help moms protect every precious drop. We're also creating a small supply fund to help provide breast pumps and essential parts like flanges and storage bags, things insurance and Medicaid often don’t cover.

Each kit will include:

• A printed guide with NICU-specific pumping and storage tips
• A notebook for tracking output and baby stats
• A bonding square to swap scents with baby
• A resource card with pump part replacement info, cleaning tips, and supply links

We’re raising $20,000 to fund:

• Legal fees to become an official nonprofit
• 150 NICU pumping kits
• Spanish-language translations
• Emergency pump supply support
• Shipping, materials, and printed guides

I’m not taking a penny. Every dollar goes toward helping NICU moms.
