I had to evacuate my apartment June 11 after my children, cat, and myself became ill from standing water and mold in my laundry room that is putting off some kind of toxin in the whole place. The picture is water that bubbles up when I stand on the vinyl tiles. My landlord had not addressed the problem in over a year and it kept coming back. By law, my apartment is supposed to provide me free housing while they do repairs and help mitigate the damage. They did not respond at all when I told them we had to evacuate, so I called public health and they came by and cited the complex with a violation on 6/20. I moved from hotel to hotel with my cat and kids for over 10 days before my apt manager offered me a vacant apartment on 6/24, and this was after I emailed them to say that legally they were supposed to be putting me up in another apartment or hotel at no cost to me. I have spent $1700 on hotels, and the vacant apartment I am in also has toxic mold that they are doing nothing about. I asked for a hotel 7/1 with no response. I have asked for legal help and housing help in Denver, but I make too much money on my disability insurance to qualify for low income legal help (but oddly I qualify for lower income housing). I have tapped all my reserves and recently had extra expenses from trying to start my own non-profit business. I need help so I can pay for a hotel or new apartment somewhere else, new mattresses, and other furniture that needs to be thrown away. My renters insurance has a clause about fungus and they refuse to pay anything so far or to cover my expenses for loss of use even though there is standing water that I did pay for extra for in my policy. I am filing charges in court myself this week against my complex for damages and violating the warranty of habitability, but it may take weeks to months to get money back. A mold mitigation company is doing tesing in my apartment, but they literally told me that they cannot talk to me because I am the tenant. I have multiple disabling medical issues and cannot clean and pack up everything myself, and will need to pay to hire someone if my landlord does not pay the company to do it. I have no money to rent another apartment in Denver (2 beds start at $1700) and all the of the affordable units that I would qualify for have long wait lists due to the horrible economic stuation we are in. I am worried I am about to become homeless. I have contacted a local news agency for help, and I have talked with my neighbors and know I am not the only one with mold issues that the complex is not addressing.
