My brother was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease as a young teen. This disease causes the cornea to bulge and thin until eventually it ruptures. Last year his left eye ruptured causing blindness. Five months later he received his first transplant. Six months after that, before the first had even healed, he required a transplant in his other eye. After numerous complications and zero progress, his surgeon expressed concerns about his second transplant; only days later he went to an unscheduled appointment due to extreme pain, redness, and swelling. His doctor immediately scheduled an emergency corrective surgery for the following day. He had a 3 hour procedure to remove damaged/loose stitches, adjust the transplanted tissue to correct the astigmatism it developed, and add a bunch more stitches. Four days after the second surgery on his right eye he ended up in the E.R. with a tear in the transplanted tissue. He is slowly regaining vision in his left eye but still can't see anything clearly in his right and won't for some time. He can't drive or enjoy his usual activities, has to use multiple medicated drops every 6 hours, and wear a shield over his eye at night while he heals. He's been unable to work for almost a year and a half now, has medical bills piling up, a mortgage, utilities, and a family to support. He's been battling with disability this whole time and gotten nowhere. After almost a year of jumping through their hoops he was denied. He got an attorney but was told he WILL be denied a 2nd time and will then have to go to a hearing. It can take years to get through this process and receive the first payment IF he even gets approved. At this point he has no idea when he will be able to see enough to go back to work. His family and friends have helped but can only do so much for this amount of time. Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated by Trav and his family.
