Trying to Rise from the A
Hi. I'm Liezl, and for the past 8+ years, I have dedicated myself to working in the non-profit sector and providing utmost care and dedication to an established small dog rescue in Southern California.
In 2018, after a long stint working for a government escort in Las Vegas, I needed a change to make an impact that was more welcoming than where I was. I adopted my second dog from a So Cal rescue and became so enamored with the good work they did that I became a regular volunteer. Shortly after, I found myself falling in love, not just with the rescue but with the President of the non-profit. From there, it was the beginning to the end (or so I thought).
in 2025, I suffered through a lot of mishaps and accidents. Starting November 2 when I broke my foot and suffered a Lisfranc Fracture to my right foot. On December 24, I went through hell and I was in a severe car accident due to inclement weather. I was driving home from a veterinary appointment for one of the rescue dogs and driving up the grade when the SUV hydroplaned after I moved from the left lane to the right in order to get away from someone speeding up the hill behind me. The SUB flew into the side of the mountain, where I thought I was going to land in a ditch but instead it flew past the ditch, into the mountain and flipped over 3 times and landed back onto the highway. The SUV was totaled and I somehow came out of the accident with minor scratches and aches and pains to my neck that to this day just comes and goes. Literally, that car accident should have take my life. The insurance company paid out my partner for her totaled car and left me empty handed for my pain and suffering.
On January 5, I was finally seen by the orthopedic surgeon to have my Lisfranc Fracture corrected. Foot and ankle surgeries are no joke and recovery time is not the same as a broken arm or leg (I wish it were).
I'm asking for assistance from people who I don’t know because after years of devoting my time to countless animals in need; I’m finally facing the facts that I am not financially sound, not at all. I don’t have a penny to my name. I have worked for free and out of the goodness of my heart. I did it to support the rescue, to love and give the dogs all that they deserved while they awaited their forever homes. I currently don’t even have any funds to take care of some of the debt that I had accumulated from having to take care of my basic needs following being down from the aftermath of the accident and surgery.
in the end, I’d do it all over again because it’s everything I loved and put my heart and soul into. I hope that one day I can go back into giving my all and giving back but also supporting a cause but also being able to support myself
