Moving to Hawaiʻi with a dog is no small (or inexpensive) undertaking. Hawaiʻi is rabies-free, which means dogs arriving from outside the state have to meet strict Department of Agriculture requirements, including specific vaccinations, testing, paperwork, and quarantine-prevention protocols.

The good news: Vienna has officially been approved to enter Hawaiʻi! 🎉

The less-good news: we’re already $2,000+ in and still have quite a few expenses ahead of us. I’m selling pretty much everything I own except Vienna’s travel essentials and, obviously, her favorite pizza toy. 🍕

Here’s what we’re still budgeting for:

• Remaining flight + airline travel fees

• Food, treats & supplements

• Initial veterinary appointments

• Flea, tick & heartworm prevention

• Remaining vaccinations, testing & medical records

• Any additional health certificates or required testing

• Leash, harness, ID tags & other island essentials

• A safe outdoor containment solution since my parents don’t have a fenced-in yard

• Establishing veterinary care on the Big Island

• A second vet in Hawaiʻi once we eventually move to Oʻahu

• Transportation and other moving-related pet expenses

• Emergency and unexpected veterinary expenses

And, of course, there will probably be a few “oh, I didn’t think about that” dog expenses along the way. 😂
