Yo Quiero Yo Puedo has worked in Mexico for over 35 years on programs that span from birth to adulthood and are all based on life skills, psychosocial support, empowerment and building change agents.

For six years, Yo Quiero Yo Puedo has implemented a community-based program called"Help them not to reach the altar”, in the La Montaña region of Guerrero, Mexico to end gender-based violence, and to specifically Child, Early and Forced Marriages and Unions (CEFMU). The work is done directly with the indigenous communities, by local trained advocates, in their local language, which has been fundamental in helping to change the harmful practices, power dynamics and social norms that have perpetuated CEFMU. Community members change their attitudes and behaviors when they understand the risks of this practice and realize that they can abandon them without leaving their culture behind.

We hope to contribute to the eradication of CEFMU in 2 localities in the municipality of Metlatónoc; Guerrero, Mexico, by:

• Improving the capacities of teachers in promoting the rights of girls and women; facilitating comprehensive sex education, including sexual and reproductive rights; promoting sexual and reproductive health; and preventing gender-based violence.

• Transforming social norms and practices in program participants (children and adolescents; mothers, fathers and caregivers; teachers, social leaders, and government authorities; and other community inhabitants) related to gender equality, diversity and inclusion, and discrimination and violence.

• Preparing and signing agreements with community members to prevent CEFMU in 2 localities, which means that 1,168 girls and adolescents, between 10 and 18 years old, will not be forced into marriage and thus also avoid early pregnancy and being subject to domestic violence.
